How to Compare Two On-Road Car Quotations Line by Line

Compare the same car, in the same registration location, with the same insurance and extras. Then compare the total payable and the full cost of finance. A lower headline on-road number can hide a different variant, reduced insurance cover or a conditional exchange bonus.

Start with two dated, itemised quotations. Record the exact model, variant, powertrain, transmission, manufacture/model year, colour, registration state, dealer, quote expiry and delivery terms.

1. Match the ex-showroom price

Check the exact variant on the manufacturer’s India price page and the written quote. Ask which taxes are included and whether colour, optional packs or stock-specific offers change the figure. A cheaper lower grade is a different offer.

2. Separate tax, registration and service charges

Request separate road-tax, registration, hypothecation and other applicable government lines, their calculations and receipts. Verify against your own state transport/RTO schedule. Do not apply one state’s percentage nationally.

The Delhi Transport registration guidance separates road tax and the prescribed registration fee and lists documents including the sale certificate and insurance. It is Delhi guidance, not a national tax table.

3. Compare insurance cover before premium

Record insurer, policy type, insured declared value (IDV), third-party and own-damage periods, compulsory and voluntary deductibles, add-ons and exclusions. Check applicable personal-accident cover or exemptions, cashless repairs and claims arrangements.

IRDAI’s motor insurance guidance explains compulsory third-party liability and why own-damage proposals need comparison by cover, IDV and deductibles. Match those terms before comparing premiums.

4. Price each accessory

Replace “accessories package” with an item list showing brand, part number, fitment, tax, price and warranty. Check what is standard equipment. Request removal or substitution of unwanted optional items and a revised total.

5. Separate warranty from maintenance

Included OEM warranty, a paid extension and prepaid servicing do different jobs. Record provider, start/end dates, kilometre limits, covered components, exclusions, claims, transfer and cancellation terms. For maintenance packages, list included visits, labour, fluids and consumables.

Hyundai India’s warranty policy illustrates model-specific terms and maintenance requirements. Read the policy for the exact car; do not transfer one model’s terms to another OEM. Obtain the contract for any third-party extension.

6. Ask what handling and logistics covers

For handling, logistics, stockyard, delivery or facilitation charges, ask what service is supplied, who receives the money and the written basis for charging it. Check for duplicate lines. An unexplained dealer label is not evidence of a government fee. This guide does not declare such charges universally payable or universally unlawful; resolve the specific charge with the dealer and relevant authority where needed.

7. Separate discounts and exchange value

List unconditional discount, manufacturer offer, corporate eligibility, exchange bonus, loyalty benefit and finance-linked offer separately, with conditions and expiry. An exchange bonus is different from your old car’s valuation. Record valuation and outstanding-loan settlement separately and compare independent offers.

Illustrative comparison: the lower quote may omit items

Invented arithmetic example only: these figures are not a real vehicle price, tax schedule, dealer offer or insurance recommendation.

Example quotation amounts in rupees
Line A B
Ex-showroom 6,00,000 6,00,000
Assumed tax and registration 55,000 55,000
Insurance 32,000 25,000
Accessories 8,000 0
Extended warranty 10,000 0
Unconditional discount −15,000 −10,000
Quoted total 6,90,000 6,70,000

B is ₹20,000 lower, but omits ₹18,000 of accessories and warranty and uses ₹7,000 less insurance. Matching those lines makes B ₹6,95,000, or ₹5,000 above A. Matching does not mean buying every extra: remove unwanted items from both and recalculate.

8. Compare the loan beyond the EMI

Request the lender’s Key Facts Statement (KFS), APR, reducing-balance rate, fixed/floating terms, principal, tenure, processing fees and taxes, bundled costs, repayment schedule, total repayment, prepayment and late-payment conditions. A flat-rate headline is not directly comparable with a reducing-balance rate.

Illustration: ₹5,00,000 at 9% annual interest on a monthly reducing balance for 60 months gives an EMI of about ₹10,379 and instalments totalling about ₹6,22,751 before fees. Rounded instalments and the final payment may differ. This is arithmetic, not a current loan offer. Add upfront fees without counting financed fees twice.

RBI customer-service guidance discusses charges, APR and key fact statements. Use the lender’s current KFS and contract for the actual offer.

Questions about comparing on-road quotations

What should an on-road quotation include?

Request the exact variant and dated ex-showroom price, separate tax and registration lines, insurance cover, itemised optional extras, discounts and the total payable. Record quote expiry and delivery terms. If borrowing, compare the lender’s KFS, fees and total repayment separately.

How can I compare two insurance quotations fairly?

Match the insurer and policy type, IDV, third-party and own-damage periods, deductibles, add-ons and exclusions. Compare claims and cashless-repair arrangements as well as premium; a lower price may reflect less cover.

Are dealership accessories compulsory?

Do not assume an accessories package is required simply because it appears in a dealer quote. Ask which items are standard, which are optional and the written basis for any claimed requirement. Request a revised quotation without unwanted optional items.

What changes the final EMI or repayment cost?

The amount borrowed, interest-rate basis, tenure, fees and financed extras can change the cost. Compare APR, the repayment schedule and total repayment, including upfront fees without counting financed fees twice. A lower EMI alone does not establish a cheaper loan.
